Memoirs of a Textile: Inabal of the Bagobo Tagabawa

In May 2023, we went to Davao Del Sur to film HABI: The Philippine Textile Council Inc.’s film on the Inabal of the Bagobo Tagabawa.

We spent time with the family of GAMABA – Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee, Salinta Monon. They welcomed us to their community and shared their practice of weaving Abaca using natural dye.

We met Lovelove Monon, the grand daughter of Salinta Monon. She is continuing the legacy of weaving in their community. We also met Salinta’s first Student, Stella, who is the wife of Salinta’s brother, Apo Ogotog.

They say that the practice of weaving is a gift from the divine. The “Goro” or divine ability is given to a person. If a design is not meant for you, you will never be able to make it. The designs of the Inabal come from a sacred place within the maker.
